K.M. Nurul Huda served as the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of Bangladesh from 2017 to 2022.
During his time in office, many elections were held, but they were marked by widespread irregularities, violence, and controversy—leading to heavy criticism of his leadership.
🗳️ Election Irregularities and Violence
- 2018 National Election:
Opposition parties claimed that voter turnout was very low and the results were suspicious. Nurul Huda, however, insisted the election was fair and credible. But many political parties disagreed and rejected the outcome. - Local Government Elections (2021–2022):
These elections were plagued by violence and irregularities. In many places, candidates were elected without competition, and several people were killed in election-related violence.
💰 Financial Misconduct and Corruption Allegations
- Honorarium for Guest Speakers:
There were allegations about Tk 2 crore being spent on 15 guest speakers during training programs for the national and upazila elections. Huda denied this and called the accusations baseless and politically motivated. - Recruitment Process Corruption:
He was also accused of corruption in recruitment worth Tk 4.08 crore. Huda defended the process as fair, transparent, and free of corruption, again calling the claims false and intentional.
🛡️ Remarks on Deploying the Army
Nurul Huda said deploying the army during elections was unnecessary.
He commented, “The army doesn’t really make a difference in elections,” and added, “We no longer have the kind of situation where people vote using ballot boxes like before.”
⚖️ Criticism and Controversy
Throughout his term, Nurul Huda was accused of bias, lack of transparency, and weakening the election process. Political parties and civil society leaders expressed serious concerns about his neutrality and performance.
He rejected all allegations, saying, “The Election Commission is not involved in any financial wrongdoing,” and “There haven’t been any serious reports of misconduct.”
