The corrupt chief secretary of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government, Mohammad Tofazzal Hossain Mia, has been at the top of power for a long time. He has abused his power everywhere. His corruption, in terms of money, goes beyond crores and even into the thousands of crores. Tofazzal Hossain Mia used a non-existent orphanage in his father’s name to embezzle government money. His ancestral home is in the Bhandaria Upazila of Pirojpur. There, he showed an orphanage in his father’s name and took government funds. Although the orphanage was supposed to receive funding at the start of the year, it was not even registered at that time. The registration was only done in June of the same year. Locals say there is no orphanage by that name, and a visit confirmed that it doesn’t exist. Even though the orphanage was officially registered in June, money was allocated in January based on a claim of having 100 orphan children. Documents from the Social Welfare Office show that funds were allocated based on the claimed number of orphans.

Tofazzal Hossain Mia is also facing charges for the killing of students and the public. He has gone into hiding to avoid arrest. On August 7, 2024, the Ministry of Public Administration issued a directive canceling the remaining tenure of his contractual appointment as Chief Secretary.
