On August 5, 2024, facing an anti-discrimination movement, the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India. The next day, on August 6, the President dissolved Parliament, causing her to lose her membership. On September 11, 2024, Sujan was arrested by RAB from the Nikunja area of the capital, Dhaka, in a case of extortion and death threats. Since there was a murder case against him, the court denied him bail and ordered him to be sent to jail. While being taken to jail after the hearing, an angry crowd threw eggs at Sujan.

Mazharnul Islam Sujan faces accusations of grabbing hundreds of acres of land from minorities and corruption. He is also involved in various controversial activities, including unchecked irregularities, corruption, and land grabbing. There are numerous allegations against him for torturing and oppressing minorities and taking their land. In the Balidangir Padiya Union of Dinajpur, Sujan established a tea garden called “Ranbag Islam Tea Estate Limited.” He attempted to forcefully get the signature of Okul Chandra on a stamp to transfer the land of the tea garden to his name.
