Momen was elected from the Sylhet-1 constituency with the nomination of the Awami League. He is the first member of the Metropolitan Awami League Committee and an advisory member of the District Awami League. Known as A.K. Abdul Momen, he is a Bangladeshi economist, diplomat, and politician who served as the foreign minister from January 2019 to January 2024.

The United States imposed sanctions on seven former and current officials of the RAB for human rights violations. Regarding the U.S. sanctions, he defended that RAB has become much more mature now, and its accountability has greatly increased.

While praising Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he said that the people of Bangladesh are happy and living in paradise. This statement has sparked intense discussion and criticism from the general public and various circles. In an event in Chittagong, Foreign Minister A.K. Abdul Momen said, “To keep Sheikh Hasina in power, I requested the Indian government to do whatever is necessary. I told them that Sheikh Hasina is our role model. If we can keep her in power, our country will move towards development and become a truly secular and non-communal nation.”

The Momen Foundation building was constructed on government land in Sylhet, with government funds. In the fiscal year 2023-24, the Local Government Division allocated 1 crore Taka for the construction of the Momen Foundation building through the Sylhet City Corporation. Previously, for the same purpose, 90 lakh Taka was allocated to the Sylhet District Council in the 2022-23 fiscal year, and 70 lakh Taka in the 2021-22 fiscal year.
