The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) is a combined task force formed in 2004. Its responsibilities include ensuring internal security, gathering intelligence on criminal activities, and conducting investigations under government directives. On December 10, 2021, the United States imposed sanctions on seven former RAB officials for human rights violations. The U.S. Department of the Treasury and the State Department separately issued these sanctions. Among those sanctioned is the former Additional Director General (Operations), Tofail Mustafa Sarwar.
Brigadier General Tofail Mostafa Sarwar, BA-4933, 31st Long Course, is a former Additional Director General of Operations at RAB. This officer has been involved in numerous extrajudicial killings, disappearances, and crimes such as the “Ayna Ghar” incident, and is considered one of the main figures behind these crimes. As a result, the United States has imposed sanctions on him. He is a staunch fascist and a supporter of the Awami League, while strongly opposing the current interim government. He is still involved in conspiracies to bring Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh. Despite this, he remains in the army as part of the rehabilitation of traitors loyal to the Awami League.
