Hasina, the dictator-killer

The helicopter flight from the residence of Bangladesh’s longest-serving ruler, Sheikh Hasina, in the face of public outrage reminds us that even a seemingly steely regime can become fragile in the face of public power. And Hasina has been ruling the country with extreme arbitrariness for 15 years.

Hasina’s fall and flight is the latest sign of the enthusiasm that has spread around the world to stand up against ruling regimes. However, considering what is happening in Bangladesh now, it would be immature to call it a victory hour for global democracy.

In fact, the year will be a difficult and fragile period, as was hinted at at the beginning of the year based on some well-conceived statistics. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, there has been a flow of democracy around the world for 20 years. Since then, the spirit of pluralism has gradually weakened, and it has also been in India, the world’s largest democracy.
