President’s PS Md. Didarul in the Eye of Controversy! From Drug Scandals to Gold Fraud—Climbing Power Through Connections

Md. Didarul Alam, currently serving as a Joint Secretary in the Government of Bangladesh, has been appointed as the Personal Secretary (PS) to the President. Over time, he has faced various allegations of corruption and misconduct.

He is a 20th batch officer of the BCS Economic Cadre. During the authoritarian rule of Sheikh Hasina, he worked as the Personal Secretary (PS) to Juenna Aziz, the Chief Coordinator of SDG Affairs at the Prime Minister’s Office. His entry into the Prime Minister’s Office was reportedly due to his close connection with former Principal Secretary Tofazzal Hossain. From there, he became a Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government. In 2023, when Mohammad Shahabuddin became President, Didarul’s luck favored him again and he was appointed PS to the President. Since then, he has remained firmly positioned in Bangabhaban (the Presidential Palace). Despite political changes and upheavals following mass movements, Didarul has managed to hold onto his influence.

Before that, he was also PS to the former State Minister for Liberation War Affairs, Captain (Retd.) Tajul Islam. During that time, there was a major scandal involving fake gold being used in crests meant for foreign freedom fighters. Although the minister lost his position over the scandal, Didarul and others involved managed to stay untouched.

Recently, while working as an Assistant Director at the Department of Narcotics Control, Didarul was accused of framing a journalist in a false case. It’s also alleged that he coached a detained person to speak in a live interview on a local online channel—an incident said to be unprecedented in the department’s history.

Moreover, during his postings in Chandpur and Jamalpur, there were more allegations of corruption and irregularities. In Jamalpur, during a raid on a red-light area, he allegedly held private meetings with the area’s manager and released a fugitive drug suspect in exchange for money.
