Helal Uddin Ahmed, the former Secretary of the Bangladesh Election Commission (EC), has recently faced several serious allegations. These include widespread irregularities and corruption during the national elections of 2014, 2018, and 2024. Accusations involve night-time voting before election day, ballot fraud, biased behavior by administrative officials, and financial dealings. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched investigations into these claims.
After the 2018 elections, the results from the Barisal-1 constituency sparked major controversy. The ruling party candidate reportedly received between 93% to 99% of the votes — an unusually high and suspicious margin. There are also claims that some officials involved in the election process accepted bribes, and that vote results were altered in exchange for money.
On October 23, 2025, Helal Uddin Ahmed was arrested from the Khulshi area in Chattogram. Police stated that the arrest was based on confidential information, and legal proceedings against him are underway. He is also accused of embezzling public funds through fake billing, which is currently under investigation by the ACC.
