Morshed Alam, who transitioned from a businessman to a politician with Hasina’s patronage, has been elected as an Awami League MP from the Noakhali-2 constituency three times, including in the controversial 2024 elections. Before entering politics, he donated 100 crore taka to Sheikh Hasina’s “tin box” fund. As a major donor to the Awami League, he installed his younger brother, Mohammad Jasimuddin, as the president of FBCCI without an election, consolidating his dominance in the business community.
Morshed Alam, the owner of Bengal Group, faces serious allegations including the takeover of television and insurance companies, land grabs, using foreign investment schemes to gain government benefits, money laundering, selling plastic resin in the black market under customs exemptions, fraud, looting National Life Insurance Company for 11 years, filing cases against board members through the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), blocking access to the board despite holding shares, and seizing the positions of chairman and director at multiple financial institutions.
