Ex-Additional Director General Mohammad Jahangir Alam: The Puppet of Awami League in Enforced Disappearances and Extrajudicial Killings

During the Awami League government, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) gained infamy as a “death squad” due to its abusive actions. RAB has been accused of serious human rights violations in the government’s fight against drugs in Bangladesh. These actions are said to undermine the rule of law, respect for human rights, fundamental freedoms, and the economic prosperity of the people of Bangladesh.

One of the seven RAB officials sanctioned by the United States for human rights violations was former Additional Director General Mohammad Jahangir Alam.

BA-4635 Brigadier General Mohammad Jahangir Alam, from the 29th Long Course, is a former RAB Commander and PGPR Commander. He is a loyal and trusted supporter of the authoritarian Sheikh Hasina and the notorious Major General Tariq Siddique. This officer is one of the key figures involved in numerous extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and incidents like the “mirror room.” As a result, the United States has imposed sanctions on him. He is a strong fascist supporter of the Awami League and a fierce opponent of the current interim government. He is still involved in conspiracies to bring Sheikh Hasina back to power in Bangladesh. As part of the rehabilitation of Awami League loyal traitors, he remains in the army.
